Atlanta United player Luiz Araujo is expected to be sidelined for four weeks after suffering a hamstring injury during the team’s 2022 MLS season opener against Sporting Kansas City on Sunday.

The winger sustained the injury minutes after scoring Atlanta United’s first goal of the game and season overall.

Araujo worked off an over the shoulder pass from Josef Martinez to curve the ball into the lower left corner of the net. The celebrations were cut short as the winger was seen signaling for a substitution while limping down the side of the pitch.

Gonzalo Pineda later confirmed the player picked up a hamstring issue, but could not estimate how long he would be out for until now.

The Brazilian player first arrived to the Eastern Conference side as a Designated Player last summer from Ligue 1's Lille. That season, the winger recorded four goals and four assists.

This leaves the head coach with a significant issue after Araujo was expected to play a huge role in Atlanta United’s attack.

Dom Dwyer could become the winger’s replacement, after the former Orlando City striker came off the bench on Sunday and scored on his debut. Brooks Lennon, Tyler Wolff and Marcelino Moreno could also be tasked with filling the void.

The team returns to action on Saturday when traveling to face the Colorado Rapids.
