Atlanta United have acquired defender Ronald Hernandez from Scottish Premiership side side Aberdeen, the club announced Monday. He has signed a contract through the 2024 Major League Soccer season.

Hernandez played with the Eastern Conference side during the 2021 as part of a loan deal, recording one goal in 13 appearances.

Beyond his contributions on the pitch, Hernandez also provided depth to the squad and is likely to be a rotation option behind Brooks Lennon at right-back for the 2022 season.

“Ronald is a talented and versatile defender who we’re pleased to add permanently to our roster,” VP and technical director Carlos Bocanegra said in a club statement.

The player is also a Venezuelan international, featuring for his country on 27 occasions.

“After coming in last season on loan, he was able to re-integrate himself into the Venezuela national team after playing valuable minutes for our club. We look forward to Ronald continuing to add competition for playing time in our team.”

Atlanta finished last season in fifth place in the Eastern Conference table. The team underwent several changes, mainly a midseason coaching change that brought in Gonzalo Pineda to the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The club also had a busy offseason, adding New York Red Bulls player Andrew Gutman to the squad after a loan stint with Atlanta in 2021, and defensive midfielder Ozzie Alonso via free agency.

The Five Stripes are set to open their 2022 campaign on February 27 when hosting Sporting Kansas City.
