Atlanta United 3-3 CF Montreal: Player ratings as Lennon salvages dramatic late draw

Atlanta United came from two goals down to salvage a 3-3 draw at the death against CF Montreal on Saturday afternoon in Major League Soccer.

The Five Stripes took an early lead thanks to Josef Martinez's second goal in as many games and looked to be on their way to a comfortable win.

But an inexplicable collapse and some dreadful defending saw them go in 3-1 down at half-time thanks to goals from Djordje Mihailovic, Ismael Kone, and Romell Quioto - the latter from the penalty spot.

A Dom Dwyer red card just three minutes after his introduction in the 67th minute looked to have killed off Atlanta United, but the hosts had other ideas.

First, Thiago Almada, the most expensive incoming player in MLS history, introduced himself to the 17s in style with an absolute rocket into the top corner from distance. Even then, few Atlanta fans really held out serious hope, that was until a Brooks Lennon free-kick evaded Montreal goalkeeper Sebastian Breza and hit the back of the net. Cue absolute bedlam in Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Brad Guzan (GK) - 5/10 - Left on an island for the Montreal goals, but made a couple of big saves to keep Atlanta United in the game.

Ronald Hernandez (RB) - 4/10 - One of four Atlanta United players ball-watching for the equalizer and gave Lassi Lappalainen too much space to pick out Kone for the second goal.

Alan Franco (CB) - 3/10 - Caught on the ball for Mihailovic's breakaway equalizer and never recovered from there. A terrifying performance similar to that in Colorado a couple of weeks ago.

Miles Robinson (CB) - 3/10 - Had absolutely no need to put his hands on Kone in giving away the penalty. Looked out of sorts all afternoon.

Andrew Gutman (LB) - 6 /10- Sloppy at times, but tried more than most to make things happen in the Montreal half.

2. Midfielders

Matheus Rossetto (CM) - 5/10 - Did well to force the mistake for the opening goal but went missing after that.

Osvaldo Alonso (CM) - 4/10 - Lost the battle against Wanyama and Kone in the middle, overrun. In fairness, Rossetto offered little help.

Marcelino Moreno (CM) - 6/10 - A couple of exciting moments and looks on the verge of hitting form, but tired quickly.

3. Forwards

Brooks Lennon (RW) - 7/10 - Some dangerous set-piece deliveries but just isn't as effective on the wing. All frustration washed away, though, when Lennon hit home a remarkable, dramatic equalizer deep into stoppage time.

Josef Martinez (ST) - 7/10 - Had the Montreal defense on pins in the opening 20 minutes with the sort of runs behind he's been missing this season. Looked to have got Atlanta United on the road but his teammates didn't get the memo until the end.

Tyler Wolff (LW) - 3/10 - Failed to attempt a shot, create a chance, or do anything of note before being hooked at half-time.

4. Substitutes

Thiago Almada (for Wolff, 45 mins) - 8/10 - Looked lively and tried to orchestrate things with little help from his teammates. So he decided to just do himself and rip one from outside the box. What an introduction to the 17s from Major League Soccer's most expensive player.

Jake Mulraney (for Hernandez, 45 mins) - 5/10 - Suffered due to switching positions following the Dwyer red card.

George Campbell (for Franco, 45 mins) - 4/10 - Had a couple of good moments but really didn't get to grips with Quioto.

Dom Dwyer (for Moreno, 64 mins) - 1/10 - On the pitch less than three minutes before getting himself sent off. Maybe that was the secret to the comeback?

Santiago Sosa (for Rossetto, 79 mins) - 6/10 - Completed all 11 of his attempted passes.

5. Goalkeeper & defenders

Sebastian Breza (GK) - 3/10 - Could do little for the first two goals but absolutely should have done better on the equalizer. Cost his team two points.

Lassi Lappalainen (RWB) - 8/10 - Put it on a dime for Kone's goal in just one moment of a great performance.

Alistair Johnston (CB) - 7/10 - Recovered well defensively after some early wobbles.

Rudy Camacho (CB) - 5/10 - Was caught far too high for Martinez's opening goal, giving the Venezuelan the freedom of the 18-yard box.

Kamal Miller (CB) - 6/10 - Was too wide on Atlanta United's opener but solid enough otherwise.

Joel Waterman (LWB) - 6/10 - Didn't get too involved in the attack but was neat and tidy.

6. Midfielders

Ismael Kone (CM) - 9/10 - Didn't cover himself in glory for Atlanta United's opener but wow, did he recover well! Assisted the equalizer, scored the go-ahead goal, and won the penalty for the third in a dominant performance. Would have been rated a 10 without that early mistake.

Victor Wanyama (CM) - 8/10 - Completely dominated the midfield battle with some direct running, precision passing, and non-compromising defensive work.

Djordje Mihailovic (CAM) - 8/10 - Created all sorts of problems for Atlanta United and remained composed to outfox Brad Guzan on the equalizer.

7. Forwards

Joaquin Torres (ST) - 6/10 - Never quite got his big moment but never stopped running and working the opposition center-backs.

Romell Quioto (ST) - 8/10 - Tore both Alan Franco and George Campbell to shreds either side of half-time. The Five Stripes never got to grips with Quioto, who kept his composure to make it 3-1 from the spot, too.

8. Substitutes

Matko Miljevic (for Mihailovic, 79 mins) - 6/10 - Looked lively in his short time on the pitch.

Robert Orri Thorkelsson (for Lappalainen, 79 mins) - 5/10 - Clean on the ball but didn't get too involved.

Rida Zouhir (for Kone, 79 mins) - 5/10 - Looked a little out of his depth.

Zachary Braut-Guillard (for Torres, 84 mins) - 5/10 - Could do nothing to stop the late Montreal collapse.
