Arsenal vs Manchester City: Complete head-to-head record

Throughout Premier League history, Arsenal vs Manchester City has always been a one-sided fixture.

In the first half of the Premier League era, it was dominated by Arsenal. In fact, it took Man City until their 20th attempt to beat the Gunners, a 1-0 win 14 years after their first Premier League meeting. However, Pep Guardiola's side have shifted the narrative in recent years.

Obviously, this fixture long predates the Premier League era, with their first meeting all the way back in 1893. So long ago was that initial clash that both sides actually had different names, with the Gunners known as Woolwich Arsenal and Man City known as Ardwick.

Unsurprisingly, there has been some sensational games between these two clubs in the past.

Arsenal 5-0 Man City - 28 October 2000

Arsenal's biggest win over City in the Premier League came at the turn of the century, with the Gunners dismantling the Cityzens at Highbury in 2000. It was a nightmare performance for Joe Royle's side just three days before Halloween, with Danny Tiatto's first-half red card proving costly.

A young Ashley Cole announced himself to the world with a superb free-kick just before half-time on his home league debut, with Dennis Bergkamp and Sylvain Wiltord adding their names to the scoresheet in the second-half. However, a certain Thierry Henry managed to steal the show in the final eight minutes, adding to his assist with two wonderfully taken finishes.

Arsenal would also put four past City in the reverse fixture in April, with Royle's men getting relegated at the end of the campaign.

Man City 4-2 Arsenal - 12 September 2009

One of the most iconic moments in Premier League history occurred between Arsenal and Man City in September 2009. It was, of course, Emmanuel Adebayor's celebration after scoring City's third in a 4-2 win at the Etihad, with the Togo international furiously running the length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the Arsenal fans.

"If a sniper shot me, he would not have struck me down," said Adebayor of his famous celebration. The former Arsenal striker was not going to let the away supporters' insulting chants go without retribution.

Adebayor added to goals from Micah Richards, Craig Bellamy and Shaun Wright-Phillips to help Mark Hughes' side to three points, with goals from Robin van Persie and Tomas Rosicky unable to turn the tide for the visitors.

Man City 6-3 Arsenal - 14 December 2013

Nine-goal thrillers are few and far between in this fixture's history, but the Premier League witnessed one during the 2013/14 season. Man City were the victors, beating Arsenal 6-3 at the Etihad on their way to the title under Manuel Pellegrini.

Sergio Aguero gave Man City an early lead before Theo Walcott's equaliser levelled proceedings. Alvaro Negredo gave the hosts the advantage shortly afterwards, with Fernandinho's lovely outside of the box effort making it 3-1 shortly after half-time. Despite Walcott's fine finish offering Arsenal a lifeline, David Silva would extinguish all hope of a comeback just three minutes later.

Fernandinho grabbed a brace late on to make it 5-2 before Per Mertesacker and Yaya Toure added their names to the scoresheet in stoppage time. It wouldn't be the last time that Arsene Wenger received a humbling on the big stage.

Arsenal 2-1 Man City (AET) - 23 April 2017

Arsenal had enjoyed a run of just one defeat in eight fixtures with Man City after that 6-3 thrashing as the two teams prepared for an FA Cup semi-final in April 2017.

The Gunners played a major role in ensuring Guardiola's debut season in England ended trophy-less as the north London side won in extra-time at Wembley.

Nacho Monreal equalised in the 71st minute after Sergio Aguero had converted Yaya Toure's pass. With the threat of penalties looming, Alexis Sanchez banged in the winner in the 101st minute to set up a final with Chelsea, which they would also win 2-1.

Arsenal 2-0 Man City - 18 July 2020

While not a stunning game of football in front of an empty Wembley, this victory marked the beginning of the Mikel Arteta era at Arsenal. Guardiola's former assistant manager got one over on his old boss, with a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang brace in the FA Cup semi-final giving the Gunners a crucial win.

Arteta's side would go on to compete against Chelsea in the final, a game they won 2-1 thanks to yet another Aubameyang double. It was the first major silverware Arteta had lifted as a manager, and provided the foundation for the wonderful Arsenal team that followed.

Arsenal 1-3 Man City - 15 February 2023

The 2022/23 title race was the first time Arsenal had genuinely looked like Premier League title winners, but despite their brilliance,City were just too powerful for them in the end. The two clashes between the sides were pivotal, both resulting in emphatic victories for the Cityzens.

The first was perhaps the most significant with Arsenal being outplayed on home soil to surrender their position at the top of the league table. Goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland more than cancelled out Bukayo Saka's first-half penalty, also delivering a huge psychological blow to the Gunners in the process.

It was perhaps the true beginning of City's ascent to the Premier League title during the 2022/23 season, with Guardiola masterminding a 4-1 victory over Arsenal in the return fixture too.

Arsenal 1-0 Man City - 8 October 2023

Arsenal asserted themselves as Man City's main title challengers in the 2022/23 season, making their meeting early in the following campaign a more than intriguing one.

In truth, the game at the Emirates Stadium largely fell flat. However, there was a grandstand finish as Gabriel Martinelli netted a winner that deflected in off Nathan Ake, earning the Gunners a statement win over their rivals.
