Arsenal have reached an agreement in principle with Gabriel Martinelli over his proposed new contract. 90min had already confirmed shortly before Christmas that the Brazilian’s new deal was close to being finalised.

Terms were broadly agreed in December on a new contract with Martinelli that will extend his stay at Arsenal until the summer of 2027. His existing deal is due to expire in 2024.

90min understands that while agreed by all parties, Martinelli is yet to actually sign the contract.

As it stands, the 21-year-old is one of the lowest earners at Arsenal and the terms in the new deal will change that so that he becomes one of the best paid players in the squad.

Martinelli’s current contract was signed back in July 2020, before his debut season at the club had even finished. In the two-and-a-half years since that time, he has become an increasingly important player for Mikel Arteta and is right now enjoying his best season to date.

Martinelli has scored seven Premier League goals in 19 appearances so far in 2022/23 to help the Gunners top the table at the halfway stage. That tally is already better than his league return in the whole of last season, which was at that time his most prolific season to date.

Plucked from the obscurity of Brazil’s lower leagues, he has started every single one of Arsenal’s Premier League games this season, becoming one of the first names on the teamsheet.

90min understands that Arsenal remain hopeful of also agreeing new contracts with Bukayo Saka and William Saliba, both of whom have deals that are up in 2024. But neither set of talks has been as advanced as those that have taken place with Martinelli and his representatives.
