Antonio Conte has spoken glowingly of his Inter players after prevailing in their must-win Champions League game against Borussia Monchengladbach.

The Nerazzurri left Borussia Park with a victory against the Group B leaders, and made sure they were still in contention to progress to the knockout phase.

Three points against Shakhtar Donetsk on the final matchday won't guarantee them a place in the last 16 however, as they would need Real Madrid and Monchengladbach to not draw, due to their inferior head-to-head record with Los Blancos.

Nonetheless, Conte put the victory down to the spirit of the team and their willingness to take responsibility.

Speaking to Sky Sports Italia after the match, Conte said (via Goal): "We absolutely deserved to win... I thank the lads; they had the right spirit. When they have this desire to help each other out and be a real team, we cause problems for the opposition.

"What I ask of the lads is to increase their level of responsibility, each and every one, because if they all do that, then we can become an ambitious side."

Matteo Darmian scored his first for the club to put the Nerazzurri 1-0 up, before Alassane Plea equalised on the stroke of half time. Romelu Lukaku bagged two to put Inter out of sight, before Plea clawed one back. Gladbach had a late equaliser chalked off for offside, and Inter clung on to claim a narrow but vital victory.

The Belgian's heroics have opened Group B up even more and have made qualification to the last 16 anyone's prize. Only three points separate the whole group after Shakhtar beat Real Madrid 2-0 in Kyiv earlier on Tuesday.

Inter host Bologna in Serie A on Saturday night, before their home tie against Shakhtar Donetsk to finish the Champions League group stage.
