Andre Onana has warned critics of his Manchester United performances that he managed to win round similar doubters during his short time at Inter.

The Cameroonian signed for the Red Devils during the summer 2023 transfer window for an initial £43.8m fee, leaving Inter after just one season.

Onana initially struggled to nail down the starting spot at San Siro after joining from Ajax, but ended the 2022/23 campaign firmly as their number one and played an integral role on their run to the Champions League final.

Expectations were high for Onana upon arrival at United, where he has replaced club legend David de Gea between the sticks. However, the 27-year-old has made a string of errors already this term and questions have been raised over his long-term suitability.

But in an interview with Sky Sports Italy, Onana was defiant about his form so far this season and pointed to his slow start at Inter as a reason for belief his performances will improve.

"Mistakes are part of learning, we know that people expect a lot from me and that's why they criticise me so much. But for me, it's not a problem, I'm used to it. The same thing also happened at Inter," Onana said.

"At the beginning they criticised me, but look how it ended...now it's eternal love with the Nerazzurri. Manchester United is an even bigger club and the expectations are also greater, but I'm sure that by doing better and better, from now on, we will smile together as happened with Inter. Few believed in us, but we showed what we were capable of.

"Now, at United, I have my future in my hands, we just have to get up and I'm sure we will. For this reason I say that life is made up of moments, and as such, for better or for worse, they are always temporary.

"There can be good seasons and bad seasons, in life you have to understand when to enjoy the good moments and when you have to endure the bad ones. We are human beings, all these things help us learn."

Onana's arrival at United was in-part down to the influence of manager Erik ten Hag, with the duo reuniting after working together at Ajax.

"I have a fantastic relationship with him," Onana said of Ten Hag. "Together at Ajax we experienced some wonderful moments and did great things.

"But, as I always say, everything is earned on the pitch and I want to say that I'm definitely here because he wanted me, but also because I was the best last season.

"We shouldn't take away the credit for the work done. I'm sure that things will improve for me here in Manchester too, because when you have the ability it's only a question of time."

United currently sit seventh in the Premier League table after 20 games and have lost 14 of their 28 matches in all competitions so far this season.
