Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez has officially joined Inter on a permanent deal, having already spent the 2019/20 season on loan at San Siro.

The transfer ends Sanchez’s unhappy two-and-a-half year stint at United and the Chilean has signed a three-year contract with Inter that runs until the summer of 2023.

Inter have confirmed that the 31-year-old former Arsenal star has made the permanent switch to Italy on a free transfer, with United not charging a formal fee.

Sanchez completed his switch to United from Arsenal in January 2018 in a swap deal for Henrikh Mkhitaryan. The Red Devils beat neighbours Manchester City to his signature but were left with an expensive flop when he failed to replicate his previous explosive form.

Sanchez scored only five times in 45 total appearances for United and his highlights from his time in Manchester were minimal. Two assists in a 3-2 win at the Etihad Stadium in April 2018 that delayed Manchester City’s title celebrations, and a dramatic late winner in a similar comeback win against Newcastle in October the following season, were the best United fans saw of him.

The player joined Inter on loan last summer when it became clear his future was not going to be at United, although an injury early in the campaign limited his involvement.

Sanchez found a new lease of life at Inter following a return to sharpness after the 2019/20 season restarted, registering seven assists in a run of eight Serie A games in June and July.

Inter finished the domestic campaign in second place behind Juventus, only a single point behind the champions. The aim for next season is to finally topple the dominant Turin club and secure a title for the Nerazzurri for the first time since the 2009/10 treble season.
