Alex Greenwood has put pen to paper on a new three-year deal at Manchester City, keeping her at the club until the summer of 2026.

Greenwood joined City from European heavyweights Lyon in the summer of 2020 and has gone on to make 80 appearances for the club, lifting the FA Cup and Continental Cup in the process.

The 29-year-old was part of England's Euro 2022 winning squad in the summer, featuring five times from the bench, including against Germany in the Wembley final.

“I’m really pleased to have my new deal sorted and it’s come at the perfect time – after a strong first half to the season, I can now just focus on the remainder of the campaign and the next three years," said Greenwood.

“Feeling settled at a club for me is so important and I absolutely have that here at City, which is why I’ve signed such a long-term deal - I just love being here.

“I have a really good relationship with Gareth [Taylor] – we’ve worked together throughout my whole time here so far – and the way he wants us to play marries up exactly with how I want to personally, so it’s the perfect match for me."

The defender signed an initial three-year deal upon joining City in 2020, which had been poised to expire next summer.

Greenwood committing her future to the club could help to prevent a repeat of last summer's transfer window at City, where three key first team players - Lucy Bronze, Georgia Stanway and Caroline Weir - all departed on free transfers, leading to a squad overhaul.

City currently sit fourth in the WSL, three points behind rivals Manchester United in the final Champions League spot after the pair drew at the Etihad in December.

“We’re thrilled to have Alex sign a new deal here at the club," added Gareth Taylor. “She is an incredibly important member of the squad, and her experience has proven invaluable to not only herself, but those around her in the team over the past few seasons.

“Alex is a consummate professional and has proven throughout her career what a talent and asset she is to every team that she has played in. She is a key part of our plans for the future, and we look forward to continuing to work with her over the coming years.”
