Manchester United forward Alessia Russo has won the PFA Vertu Motors WSL Fans' Player of the Month for December in recognition of her top performances.
Russo has found her feet in the WSL in a big way in 2021/22 and carried on her excellent November form into December, helping her team record back-to-back league wins.
The 22-year-old rising England star has been thriving as a ‘number nine’ and impressed with her all-round displays in December, showcasing ability to operate as a focal point, link the play between midfield and attack, bring others into the game and create chances.
As United beat Brighton to start the month, Russo’s driving run down the right flank and teasing cross provided the killer second goal of the game for Vilde Boe Risa.
In her team’s second of two December wins, Russo made the third goal in the 5-0 rout of Aston Villa for Lucy Staniforth, reacting quickest to win a loose ball in the penalty area and smartly laying it off for her teammate to score.
Russo was a crucial contributor to those results, which ended a run of four WSL games without a win and marked back-to-back league wins for the first time since September. It also meant that United finished December and the calendar year only two points off a Champions League place.
To win, Russo took a sizeable 27% chunk of the final vote, beating teammates Ella Toone and the aforementioned Boe Risa, as well as Reading’s Deanne Rose and Tottenham pair Jessica Naz and Rachel Williams to the individual award decided by the fans.
