Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho has been pictured leaving Old Trafford wearing a protective boot and on crutches after sustaining an ankle injury.

The 18-year-old, who is scheduled to join up with the Argentina senior squad later this month, picked up the problem during United's 0-0 draw at home to Southampton on Sunday.

Casemiro received a first-half red card for a dangerous challenge on Carlos Alcaraz, and with the scores still level midway through the second period, Erik ten Hag turned to his bench and threw on live-wire South American wingers Garnacho and Facundo Pellistri.

Both looked promising after their introductions, and with the clock running down, Garnacho took the ball and made a dart to the byline, only to be met by a slide tackle from Kyle Walker-Peters.

While the challenge was clean and fair, Garnacho's legs awkwardly tangled with those of Walker-Peters and the United forward spent several minutes writhing in agony and receiving treatment on his ankle. He initially returned to the field of play but was met by another heavy challenge soon after and was eventually replaced by Fred in stoppage time.

Garnacho has now been spotted departing Old Trafford in a protective boot and escorted away on crutches. He is expected to be evaluated in the coming days.

Teammate Christian Eriksen was left in a similar state after picking up an ankle problem in United's FA Cup win against Reading at the end of February. He has been ruled out until late April or early May.
