Manchester United have been dealt an injury blow with winger Alejandro Garnacho set to miss a crucial part of the season with injury.

The Argentinian youngster suffered the injury in the Premier League draw with Southampton last week and he immediately looked like he was in a lot of pain.

Rumours persisted after the game that he would have suffered a serious knock and may be facing a sustained spell out of the Man Utd side.

Those rumours have proven to be unfounded, although the Red Devils have not escaped entirely and Garnacho will miss some football.

What is the injury latest and when might Man Utd fans expect to see him back in the side?

What injury did Alejandro Garnacho get against Southampton?

United have confirmed that Garnacho has been diagnosed with an ankle problem which will keep him on the sidelines.

"It is difficult to put into words how I’m feeling right now," Garnacho wrote on Twitter.

"Unfortunately I will not be able to help my team and teammates in the upcoming games in what is a very important part of the season for us at Manchester United.

"I am disappointed to also miss the opportunity to be with my teammates of the Argentinian National Team in what would have been a great and proud moment for me and my family.

"This is part of football and our profession, however, I am already focused in my recovery. God has taught me to never give up and I will make sure I am back stronger than ever!"

What Man Utd games could Alejandro Garnacho miss?

United have not put a timeframe on Garnacho's recovery but have conceded he will miss 'a number of weeks', which will see the Argentine return after the international break.

He was due to link-up with the World Cup winners for the games against Panama and Curacao later this month, but those plans have obviously been scrapped.

Even before then, Garnacho will miss Man Utd’s games against Real Betis in the Europa League and Fulham in the FA Cup.

More worryingly for Man Utd, directly after the international break they have three games in quick succession against Newcastle (A), Brentford (H) and Everton (H). Just which of those fixtures Garnacho will miss is unclear.

The away game against Nottingham Forest on April 15 may be a realistic target for Garnacho, though, and he will certainly hope to be back for the game against Chelsea on April 22.
