Albert Rusnak announces departure from Real Salt Lake

Albert Rusnak announced his departure from Real Salt Lake via Instagram on Saturday, marking his stance as a free agent. 

The Slovakian midfielder first signed for the Western Conference side on January 6 2017, transferring from Eredivisie team FC Groningen. He then re-signed to a multi-year contract through 2021, keeping him on the roster as a Designated Player. 

“I want to take the time to let everyone know that the last 5 years playing in front of you and representing the Claret-and-Cobalt has truly been an honor," he wrote.

“My time at Real Salt Lake is done and while it is now time to say goodbye, please know that I will cherish our memories, how we overcame many obstacles, in the face of immeasurable odds. Thank you for your passion, support and the love you expressed to me, my family and the team," he wrote.

Rusnak recorded 41 goals and 39 assists in 140 games played for Real Salt Lake before his departure.

As one of the league’s highest-profile free agents this offseason, the midfielder is being linked to several clubs. The most prominent appear to be the Seattle Sounders and D.C United. 

The Western Conference side also lifted the interim tag on head coach Pablo Mastroeni after he stepped in to replace Freddy Juarez as a temporary solution in late August. 

Teams are set to return to action on February 26 to kick off the 2022 Major League Soccer season.
