France international Lucas Hernandez will 'definitely stay' at Bayern Munich next season amid rumours over a summer move to Newcastle United, the player's agent has confirmed.

Hernandez only joined Bayern Munich from Atlético Madrid before the start of the 2019/20 campaign, with the 24-year-old becoming their new club-record signing in an €80m transfer.

The defender has struggled with injuries throughout his maiden season in Bavaria and that's prompted links with Newcastle United, but Hernandez's agent has confirmed the World Cup winner will be staying at the Allianz Arena beyond the summer.

"Lucas isn't going anywhere and will definitely stay at Bayern," agent Manuel Garcia Quilon told Sky Germany.

Hernandez's initial links with Newcastle United came from a report by Bild, who suggested Steve Bruce's side had made an enquiry into the France international's availability.

It's not made exactly clear if Newcastle's interest was in a permanent or loan move, but as Hernandez would almost certainly prove to be too expensive for the club's new owners - they'll still have to follow Financial Fair Play regulations - it's assumed they were mulling over a season-long loan.

Although on the surface it appears Hernandez has struggled to make an impact at Bayern Munich, making just 15 appearances across all competitions, the Frenchman has suffered with injuries throughout his time in Germany.

Hernandez's problems, as well as similar issues for Niklas Süle, have forced David Alaba and Alphonso Davies to play out of position this season.

Alaba has covered injuries to Hernandez and Süle as a left-sided centre back, playing alongside Jérôme Boateng, while Davies has thrived as a makeshift left back.

Although an injury-free Bayern Munich defence would have enough strength to allow one player to leave, the Bundesliga champions have Boateng at the top of their sale list, seeing Hernandez as a key player for next season.
