Dortmund Transfers: 3 Goalkeepers BVB Could Realistically Target This Summer

While Roman Bürki has been a consistent and dependable goalkeeper for the last five years, there is a feeling that perhaps Borussia Dortmund should look at offering the Swiss international a little more competition than he currently faces.

Dortmund have four first-team keepers, but only Bürki is anything like a household name in world football. Beside him, BVB’s books include Marwin Hitz, Luca Unbehaun and Eric Oelschlägel, but none are going to take over as the new number one any time soon.

Here,90min takes an in-depth look at the goalkeeper position, detailing three players that would be worth every penny they cost if they could compete with and ultimately dislodge Bürki as the club’s first-choice shot-stopper.

Álex Remiro

If indeed the season does finish abruptly at the point it's at right now due to the coronavirus pandemic, Real Sociedad would keep ​Atlético Madrid, Getafe and Valencia from earning ​Champions League football, stealing that fourth and final slot for themselves.

A lot of that has been down to their 25-year-old Spanish goalkeeper Álex Remiro, quickly becoming a noted figure in ​La Liga. In 20 league matches this season, he’s conceded just 24 goals – form to be reckoned with given the defence in front of him.

​Dortmund love a bargain, and Remiro would be that.

Potential Price: £20m-£30m

Péter Gulácsi

A former ​Liverpool flop who never once took to the field as a Reds player, Gulácsi has reinvented himself as one of Europe’s best goalkeepers while at RB Leipzig. The current ​Bundesliga season has seen the Hungary international concede the same number of goals as games he has played ­– 24 of each, a great record and a little better than Remiro.

He’s kept clean sheets against the likes of ​Schalke, Zenit and ​Tottenham this season, showing he’d be well-suited to taking the title of BVB’s new number one. A decade ago, he had to take loan spells at Hereford United and Tranmere Rovers to get game time. Now, we reckon he’d be a frontrunner as the new goalkeeper for Germany’s second-biggest club.

Potential Price: £25m-£35m

Zack Steffen

Steffen came to prominence as a young star in American collegiate football, before the Freiburg reserve team and then Columbus Crew back in the States benefitted from his height and agility.

For Pep Guardiola’s ​Manchester City to buy him in 2019, he needed to be mighty good with the ball at his feet. He is that. Steffen has shown this season that he can hack it in the Bundesliga, on loan at Fortuna Düsseldorf. The club find themselves third-bottom, but Steffen and Fortuna have conceded fewer goals than the teams around them.

The United States’ number 1 looks set to play for a major European side at some point and Dortmund could well be that team. If Steffen was loaned out this season, there seems to be no reason why City wouldn’t offer him away again next term. BVB would certainly benefit.
