Iker Casillas Proposes a 'Vintage Clásico' After Coronavirus Pandemic Is Over

Spanish and Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas has proposed that former Barcelona and Real Madrid stars come together to play a 'vintage Clásico' for charity, once the coronavirus pandemic is over.

With football currently on an enforced break due to the current COVID-19 crisis, many fans and players alike have looked to the past to satisfy their cravings for the game, through highlights of classic matches between the world's best players.

Casillas, who spent 16 years at the Santiago Bernabéu before departing in 2015, tweeted his suggestion that former players of both Los Blancos and La Blaugrana should assemble and play each other once more, once normality resumes.

Responding to tweets between his former Spain teammates Andres Iniesta and Carles Puyol, Casillas wrote: "...WHEN ALL THIS NIGHTMARE IS OVER, we should gather the legends of years ago and play a VINTAGE CLASICO!!"

Casillas, who added that the game should be used to raise money for those in need, was quickly inundated with replies from fans supporting the mouth-watering proposal, while the likes of Iniesta and Cesc Fabregas all threw their weight behind the idea.

Barça legend Iniesta (a veteran of 38 Clasicos) told the keeper to 'count on him', while Fabregas jokingly asking the Madrid legend who he would get to referee the game.

From the Real Madrid side of things, striker Fernando Morientes replied too, adding his support for his former teammate's proposition.

While still arguably the biggest league game in the global footballing calendar, El Clásico has struggled to deliver on the entertainment front of late.

La Liga leaders Barcelona lost 2-0 to Madrid at the Bernabeu shortly before the hiatus, while the meeting at Camp Nou ended in a 0-0 stalemate earlier in the season.

Sergio Ramos leads the fixture for most appearances with 44, while Lionel Messi is the game's unsurprising top scorer with 26.

In addition to Iniesta, Fabregas and Morientes, if Casillas were able to convince the likes of Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Rivaldo and even Ronaldo to return for a star-studded one-off charitable initiative, then the game would undoubtedly have the potential to be major event for fans around the world to look forward to.

Make it happen Iker!
