8 Serie A Games You Should Re-Watch While the Football Is Cancelled

I know - life is so boring without actual football, isn't it? The world keeps turning, but footballs all over the planet have gone flat. But that shouldn't stop us from remembering just why we love the greatest sport on earth so much. 

Throughout the years, Serie A has provided us with some unforgettable moments in football history, and there was a time when the Italian top flight was the undisputed home of the most decorated and exciting stars of their generation. 

So, given the whole of Italy has been on lockdown for over a week, 90min has decided to go on a trip down memory lane and look back at some great Serie A encounters, for you to watch all over again in lieu of new drama...

ì​Inter 2-3 Juventus (2017/18)

​Juventus ​were in the midst of their closest title race for years with Napoli, and dropping points was simply not an option with three games of the campaign remaining. I Bianconeri travelled to San Siro to face an Inter side desperate to deal their rivals a decisive hammer blow. 

Despite being a man down, I Nerazzurri overturned an early deficit to take a 2-1 lead, and Juve's title hopes were beginning to slip away. And then, Juve did Juve things. Two goals in the final three minutes, including a late ​Gonzalo Higuain header, put the title holders in the driving seat, and they held on to claim yet another scudetto. 

Lazio 1-5 Roma (2001/02)

The Rome ​derby is often a hard-fought, heated and nervy affair between two evenly-matched teams. But in 2002, Roma absolutely blew Lazio away, romping to a 5-1 victory in superb style. Francesco Totti is normally the star of the show - and well, he did shine brightly on this occasion - but Vincenzo Montella was the real hero of the hour. 

'The Little Plane' bagged four goals, tearing apart a hapless Lazio defence, as Roma ran rampant in the Derby della Capitale. But Totti also had his moment in the sun, capping off the win with an audacious chip from well outside the penalty area. A bonkers match, and one which will be remembered for years to come. 

Napoli 2-4 Lazio ​(2014/15)

One of the greatest games in football history, let alone purely Serie A. Lazio travelled to Naples knowing that a point would be enough to gain Champions League qualification for the next season. For Napoli, they had to beat their visitors, and they would leapfrog le Aquile into the top three. All to play for. 

The next 90 minutes were nothing short of extraordinary. Lazio led by two goals, then were pegged back at 2-1, then had a man sent off, then allowed Napoli to equalise. We're nowhere near finished though. Napoli got a red card of their own, but then won a penalty to possibly go ahead. Higuain fluffed his lines, and back from the dead, Lazio rose to somehow claim an implausible 4-2 win. 

Chaos. 

Lazio 2-3 Inter (2017/18)

Another straight shoot-out for Lazio and Champions League qualification, but with a much more miserable ending for le Aquile. On the final day of the 2017/18 season, ​Inter travelled to Rome, knowing they had to overcome the Eagles to earn Champions League football the following season. 

Going into half-time, Lazio were 2-1 up and completely controlling the pace of the game comfortably. Implosion time. Stefan de Vrij recklessly gave away a penalty with 12 minutes to go. which Mauro Icardi converted - Senad Lulic was then sent off a minute later for the hosts, and Matias Vecino scored a header two minutes after that to sink Lazio to an unfathomable defeat. 

Drama central. 

  Roma 4-5 Inter ​(1998/99)

A proper rollercoaster. ​Goals galore, and some incredibly talented players on show. Inter travelled to Rome and got involved in a proper ding-dong at the Olimpico. Roma were forever chasing the game, but having found themselves 2-0 and 3-1 down, they managed to draw level at 3-3. 

I Nerazurri regained the lead, but Eusebio Di Francesco equalised again for the hosts with ten minutes to play. All of Roma's hard work was undone three minutes from time however, when well-known party-pooper Diego Simeone scored the winner, breaking Roman hearts. 

Ronaldo. Baggio. Totti...Collina. Just go and watch it now. 

Milan 0-1 Juventus (2004/05)

Although it may not be a high-scoring goal-fest, not all classics have to be, in fairness. ​Neck and neck at the top of Serie A with four games remaining, ​Milan hosted Juventus in a game which was destined to decide the title's home. 

The game was clinched by a moment of absolute class, when Alessandro Del Piero improvised an overhead-kick cross which David Trezeguet nodded home for Juve. Next came the Milan onslaught. Cross after cross, shot after shot, penalty appeal after penalty appeal. I Rossoneri pushed, but ultimately fell short. 

It proved to be a monumental victory, as Juve went on to lift the title. 

Lazio 4-4 Milan (1999/00) 

A goal-fest, and a huge game in the title race. Both boxes ticked. Lazio and Milan met at the Stadio Olimpico, and the stage was set for the elite stars of football to do battle. Particularly, Andriy Shevchenko. 

The game ebbed and flowed, swinging in and out of the two sides' reach, until the Ukrainian superstar blew the Eagles away with a stunning 25-minute hat-trick. Lazio fought back to claim a point, which would prove vital in their race to lift the title at the end of the season. 

Inter 3-2 Milan (2018/19)

Another massive derby to sink your teeth into - and one which Icardi always enjoyed. For a time, the Argentine was the king of Milan, and he ruled mercilessly when facing his fiercest rivals. 

Icardi barely touched the ball throughout the game, but left his mark on proceedings by scoring a remarkable hat-trick, born from pure instinct and a clinical edge. With the game evenly poised at 2-2 in the 90th minute, Inter were awarded a penalty and Icardi stepped up.
