Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has been named Premier League Player of the Month for February - a remarkable feat given that he only made his debut in English football on 1 February following a January transfer from Sporting CP.

Fernandes immediately lifted a United side that had performed poorly throughout much of December and January in his debut against Wolves, a 0-0 draw, before going on to inspire his new team to back-to-back wins over Chelsea and Watford in the remainder of February.

In those victories, the Portugal international scored his first Premier League goal, netting from the penalty spot against the Hornets, while he also contributed an assist in both games.

Fernandes is pleased with how his United career has started, realising a childhood ‘dream’ to play for the club. Yet he is still determined to play even better.

“Since I was a kid it was a dream to play for Man Utd, and to be there at Old Trafford is the biggest dream of my career,” Fernandes told PremierLeague.com.

“When you come to a new club you always want to score, and the first goal is special. It doesn’t matter how the goal is scored, but important is the goal’s worth. I’m happy with my start, but from now I need to give more, to be better.”

Fernandes is actually only the third Portuguese player to win Premier League Player of the Month, and the first since August 2008 when former Chelsea midfielder Deco received the prestigious individual accolade.

Ex-Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is the only other player from Portugal to have won, having done so four times in total – twice in 2006 and twice in 2008.
