UEFA to Consider Moving Euro 2020 to December Ahead of Likely Summer Postponement
By Sean Walsh
UEFA are considering hosting the upcoming European Championship in December to allow club competitions a chance to continue over the summer.
Proposals regarding the tournament will be discussed on Tuesday, with previous reports suggesting it is likely they will postpone the tournament until the summer of 2021.
However, the Telegraph now report that UEFA could in fact move the tournament to December instead.
This would be similar to FIFA's plans for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar which are set to disrupt the European club season. But it turns out UEFA could be the ones to pioneer such a change.
All of Europe's top five leagues had plans in place to incrementally reduce their winter breaks in the build-up to the World Cup, and they may now have to implement them much sooner than they would have expected if UEFA give the green light to Euro 2020 being played in the winter.
It seems inevitable that UEFA will move it one way or another, with plans for the tournament to kick off on June 12 in Rome and conclude on July 12 at Wembley looking increasingly unlikely.
The Telegraph add that there is a feeling among Premier League clubs that their scheduled return date at the start of April will be pushed back. Clubs will meet again next week in another attempt to find a solution as to how this season will end.
FA chairman Greg Clarke does not believe that the season will be able to finish and that it would not be 'feasible' to do so.
West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady said in her column for The Sun that the season should be declared void if teams are not able to fulfil their remaining fixtures, while it's also been reported that Spurs too are in favour of nulling the campaign.
