Tottenham Eyeing Free Transfer for Watford's Ben Foster in Summer Window

​Tottenham are weighing up an attempt to sign Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster on a free transfer this summer transfer window.

The former England international, who has been a model of consistency in a chaotic season which has seen Watford fighting against relegation, will be free to leave the Hornets when his contract expires in four months’ time.

With Paulo Gazzaniga unspectacular in his 25 appearances this season, and third-choice goalkeeper Michel Vorm set to depart this summer, Foster is seen as the perfect deputy for Spurs captain Hugo Lloris, according to The Telegraph.

Foster’s arrival would also allow Spurs to fill another ‘homegrown’ slot in European competition, helping bypass a rule that has caused problems in their past Champions League squad registration, with Sporting CP academy product Eric Dier and Swansea academy’s Ben Davies not having been trained by the English FA.

Since excelling in Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield, Gazzaniga has had a largely underwhelming season, and was one of a number players criticised in Sunday’s 3-2 home defeat by Wolves, as the visitors scored three times from only four shots on target.

Foster has shown signs of ageing in recent seasons, hardly covering himself in glory during his side’s 8-0 defeat to ​Manchester City and allowing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to get away with a bizarre goal after failing to clear the ball in Watford’s 1-0 loss to ​Arsenal last season.

Nonetheless, he is still respected as one of the most seasoned shot-stoppers in the ​Premier League, and memorably showed his class against Sheffield United by stopping Lys Mousset’s shot at point-blank range.

​Tottenham fans will be familiar with Foster - who has been capped for England eight times - mostly for his heroics for ​Manchester United in the 2009 League Cup Final, when he brilliantly saved Jamie O'Hara’s penalty to propel the Red Devils to victory over the Lilywhites.
