José Mourinho Comments About Chris Smalling Resurface Amid Fresh Tottenham Links
Chris Smalling has once again been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, but as a José Mourinho reunion reportedly beckons it has come to light that the Portuguese boss hasn't always been the defender's biggest fan - with the ball at his feet, at least.
Smalling has spent the season on loan at Roma from Manchester United and has transformed from something of a laughing stock in England to one of Serie A's most effective central defenders.
The turnaround in his fortunes has been noted back home, with Spurs reported last month to have 'made contract' over a move. Roma have made no secret of their desire to sign him permanently, but Tutto Mercato warn them to 'be careful' in their approach, since Mourinho's side are a viable contender.
It leaves Smalling with a decision to make when the transfer window opens. At 30 years old, does he stick with what has sparked his revival, or does he return to England for another crack at the Premier League?
Speaking to Sky Sports, he admitted it's a decision that is weighing on his mind, but dropped a very strong hint his future may lie in the Italian capital.
"When I first came it was exciting but also daunting because you're not sure what to expect," he said.
"New country, new experience. But considering the way I've settled in, the love that I have felt, especially from the fans but everyone in Rome, it will be an interesting decision to make.
"Some of the other players said if you really hit the ground running, the love that you can have in this city is unbelievable. That's really what I've felt and so have my family. Long may it continue."
Smalling is a long way from the player Manchester United offloaded, and certainly a long way removed from the player who started the 2017 Europa League final for Mourinho's Manchester United.
Of that Smalling, Mourinho joked following the win over Ajax that his decision to play long-ball that day was owing to his lack of ability with the ball at his feet.
“I told my players that for me, beautiful is not giving our opponents what they want,” he said, as quoted by teamTALK. “I even joked with Smalling, ‘With your feet, we’re for sure not playing out from the back!"
That perhaps doesn't bode well for Spurs' prospects of free-flowing football from 2020/21...
