Edinson Cavani's mother has insisted she and her family 'don't understand' reports that the Paris Saint-Germain star's brother and agent scuppered his move to Atletico Madrid, despite Atleti president Enrique Cerezo hinting as much on the weekend.

The Uruguayan wanted to leave PSG during the January transfer window after falling behind Mauro Icardi in the pecking order at Parc des Princes.

Speaking at the Madrid derby the day after the transfer window closed, Cerezo said of his club's failed attempt to bring Cavani to the Wanda Metropolitano: "It's a disgrace. The situation with some players' representatives and their families. We won't be cowed by those trying to rob us."

Cavani has just six months left on his contract in the French capital, and Diego Simeone was hoping to steal him away from PSG for a cut-price fee in a desperate attempt to fix his horribly misfiring forward line.

Reports had claimed that a deal was close to going through before last week's January deadline, but Cavani's brother and agent Walter's demands for commission ended up killing the move.

Speaking to AS, Cavani's mother Berta Gomez said: "It's not impossible that Edinson goes to Atlético Madrid in the summer, if and when the president takes back what he said.

"We don't understand why the president said such nonsense. It was out of place and it hurt us a lot. It is absolutely false to say that Walter asked for a fee from the signing. He should have told the fans why Cavani really didn't go to Atlético. It's because, firstly, PSG didn't want him to leave and secondly, Atlético never reached the amount PSG wanted when they negotiated.

"My son did everything he could to go to Atlético. He put pressure on by not playing a PSG and told his brother that he was willing to drop his wages to sign with Atlético. He wanted to play with Cholo and he showed that at every turn."
