Bayern Munich Cruise to 3-1 Win Over Mainz to Move Top of Bundesliga
By Adam Aladay
Bayern Munich moved top of the Bundesliga on Saturday afternoon, easing past Mainz 3-1 on Saturday with Robert Lewandowski scoring yet again.
It took the away side just eight minutes to move into the lead. Benjamin Pavard found himself forward on the right and his cross was attacked by Lewandowski, the striker guiding his header into the bottom corner to score his 22nd league goal of the campaign.
Lewandowski was denied a second moments later, but Leon Goretzka latched on to the loose ball and played it across to Thomas Muller, who had the simple task of passing the ball into the net. Mainz did hit the post and grew into the contest after the second goal, but Thiago Alcantara made it 3-0 with less than half an hour on the clock. The midfielder danced through the heart of the defence and coolly slotted home.
The home side were able to pull one back just before half time through Jeremiah St. Juste, after some poor defending from Goretzka. Bayern continued to dominate possession in the second half, but the tempo dropped and chances were harder to come by.
Mainz pushed to find the strike that would bring them to within just one goal of the wannabe leaders, and although they did think they had scored a second late on through Robin Quaison, the goal was eventually ruled out.
Bayern came into the game second in the table, but the win means they have now moved ahead of RB Leipzig, who take on Borussia Mönchengladbach later on Saturday. The German giants next host Hoffenheim in the DFB-Pokal on Wednesday evening. They then return to Bundesliga action as they take on Leipzig in a top of the table clash the following Sunday.
