Bayern Munich defender David Alaba is said to be optimistic about the possibility of signing a new contract with the Bundesliga champions.

Alaba's contract expires in June 2021, having last signed an extension in March 2016, but is eager to put pen to paper over a new deal.

Christian Falk, of Bild, has revealed that Alaba is pleased how current extension negotiations are going, suggesting that the Austrian is set to extend his current deal at the Allianz Arena.

Falk took to Twitter to say that the defender, who has been at the Bundesliga giants since joining their youth system just under 12 years ago, is "optimistic about negotiations to extend his contract", but the deal may hinge on his salary.

Alaba has made 19 appearances for Bayern this season, taking his total to a staggering 363 for the club.

However, due to deficiencies at the heart of Munich's defence, and the emergence of Alphonso Davies at left-back, the Austrian defender has been converted into a makeshift centre-half for the majority of the campaign, straying from his usual role on the left-hand side.

The 27-year-old is seemingly happy regardless, and is looking to continue his esteemed journey with Bayern - aiming to lift a ninth Bundesliga title this season.

The German giants will want to do everything in their power to keep the 72-time Austrian international, who has been a key and consistent factor in Bayern's success over the past decade.

While money may be an initial stumbling block in negotiations, with the defender wanting an increased salary, the two parties appear likely to find a suitable agreement.

Bayern can ill-afford to lose Alaba, especially given their current predicament in the league. The club are currently second in the German top flight, one point behind RB Leipzig, and face a difficult Champions League tie with Chelsea in the round of 16 come February.
