Daniel Podence Touted to Be Confirmed as New Wolves Signing on Sunday in €23m Transfer
By Ben Carter
Olympiacos forward Daniel Podence will apparently be unveiled as a Wolverhampton Wanderers player on Sunday, after completing his medical and agreeing on personal terms earlier this weekend.
The 24-year-old has spent the last 18 months in Greece following a move from Sporting CP, going on to make 68 appearances across all competitions while also breaking into the senior Portuguese national team.
Podence has spent the weekend completing his medical with Wolves and O Jogo (via Sport Witness) report that his move will be finalised on Sunday.
It's a deal that will cost an initial €23m, making Podence Wolves' second most expensive transfer of all time behind Raúl Jiménez, while there's also the inclusion of €5m in performance-based add-ons.
A €23m fee also makes the 24-year-old Olympiacos' record sale, overtaking former Mexico international Nery Castillo who joined Shakhtar Donetsk for €20m in 2007.
Wolves have already completed the signing of midfielder Leonardo Campana this month, with the 19-year-old arriving on a free transfer from Ecuadorian side Barcelona SC Guayaquil.
They've also offloaded Ivan Cavaleiro to Fulham, while summer signing Patrick Cutrone joined Fiorentina on an 18-month loan deal which includes an obligation to buy in 2021.
Podence could be in line to feature in Wolves' next Premier League game against Manchester United, with Nuno Espírito Santo's side set to travel to Old Trafford next weekend.
Wolves lost their last encounter with United in the FA Cup, while they haven't picked up a league win at Old Trafford since the 1979/80 season - Melvyn Eves scored the only goal of the game.
Espírito Santo's side were able to take a point away from Old Trafford last season, but to date they've lost 16 of their 22 trips to Old Trafford across all competitions.
Wolves then face Leicester City before returning to Europa League action in the first round of the knockout stages against La Liga's relegation candidates Espanyol.
