Atletico Madrid will be hoping to advance to the Copa del Rey round of 16 when they take on minnows Cultural Leonesa at Estadio Reino de León on Thursday.

After a shock defeat to Eibar at the weekend Atleti sit eight points behind Barcelona and Real Madrid in La Liga, meaning the cup is probably their best chance of silverware this season.

Los Rojiblancos have progressed from this round for every year since 2011 and will be strong favourites to do so again against third tier Leonesa.

But the underdogs will take heart from the likes of Badajoz, Badalona and Unionistas, who were able to pull off giant killings in the last round.

Team News

Atletico are likely to be without Kieran Trippier and Jose Gimenez who missed the defeat to Eibar with muscle problems.

Thomas Lemar is also out with a muscle strain, while long-term absentee Diego Costa is still unavailable due to his herniated disc.

Cultural Leonesa will be without club captain Antonio Martinez after he picked up suspension for too many yellow cards.

Apart from that they have a clean bill of health, and will be hoping that forward Dioni - who has ten goals this season - can fire them to an unlikely victory.

Predicted Lineups

LeonesaMontragud; Fernandez, Rodas, Gonzalez, Castaneda; Martin, Menudo; Pichin, Marcos, Kawaya; Dioni.
AtleticoAdán; Arias, Felipe, Hermoso, Manu Sánchez; Herrera, Llorente, Saúl, Vitolo; Camello, Felix.

Head to Head Record

These sides were drawn consecutively against each other in the Copa del Rey in 2002 and 2003, with Atleti coming out on top both times.

Angel Correa

Prior to that you have to go all the way to the 1955/56 La Liga season to find the last time they played one another.

It was Leonesa's only season in Spain's top flight and Los Rojiblancos won both fixtures between the pair.

Recent Form

The hosts have been in good league form this season and currently sit second in Group 2 of the Segunda Division B, which will be enough to land them a playoff spot for promotion to the second tier of Spanish football.

Alvaro Morata

Their success has largely been built on defensive solidity, with goalkeeper Leandro Montragud keeping eight clean sheets this season.

Atletico have also been defensively solid, conceding just 14 goals in La Liga this season, but it's been at the other end of the pitch where they've had problems.

Diego Simeone's side have managed just 22 goals in 20 games and could do with bouncing back in the cup, after a shock loss to Eibar compounded the misery of losing on penalties in the Supercopa final to rivals Real Madrid.

Despite Atleti's recent struggles you'd have to make them favourites against such weak opposition.

Joao Felix

Leonesa will need a miracle to progress from this tie, but in this season's Copa del Rey nothing can be taken for granted.
