Schalke will be able to make Jean-Clair Todibo's loan from Barcelona permanent in the summer for a fee of €25m plus add-ons.
The 20-year-old found game time incredibly hard to come by since swapping Toulouse for Barcelona back in January 2019, managing just five appearances during the entirety of 2019, so he decided to head out on loan to Schalke.
The deal is set to run until the end of the current season, but Barcelona confirmed on their official website that Schalke can make the transfer permanent for a fee of €25m plus an extra €5m in add-ons.
As they do with so many of their young talents, Barcelona have also included a buy-back option in his contract, meaning they would be able to pay €50m plus €10m in add-ons to bring him back if they wanted.
If Schalke decline to pay the €25m fee, then Todibo will simply return to Barcelona at the end of the current campaign.
Marca note that Barcelona are confident they have made the right decision in loaning Todibo out as he had pretty much no chance of making it at Camp Nou at this moment in time.
Gerard Piqué and Clément Lenglet have dominated the starting lineup at the club, while Samuel Umtiti and academy graduate Ronald Araújo were both ahead of Todibo in the pecking order as well.
Unsurprisingly, Barcelona accepted that playing just 325 senior minutes in a calendar year is not the best way to develop a player, so they have agreed to send him out on loan to try and prove himself elsewhere.
“We said during the training camp in Spain that we would only be active in the market if something opened up that would help us.
“Since Benjamin Stambouli’s recovery is taking a little longer than we had all hoped, it makes sense to bring in another central defender. He can also play in defensive midfield. We will all do our best to support him in the development of his clear potential. We’re looking forward to having him.”
