With Brazilian Léo Duarte sidelined with an ankle injury, Milan found themselves short of options at the back, and Caldara's exit left them with just two senior centre-backs, Alessio Romagnoli and Mateo Mussachio, while 20-year-old Matteo Gabbia has also been used as backup.
Kjær will now give Stefano Pioli a new option at the back as he looks to steer Milan back up the Serie A table.
