Barcelona's backup goalkeeper Neto will make his long-awaited La Liga debut in the Catalan derby this weekend after an injury to Marc-André ter Stegen.

The Brazilian shot-stopper, who was signed from Valencia for €26m during the summer, has made just one appearance for the club so far this season - coming in their 2-1 win over Inter in the Champions League group stages.

The 30-year-old has been part of every Barcelona squad since he returned from a hand injury at the start of the season, and Neto will now make his La Liga debut against rivals Espanyol after an injury to Ter Stegen.

"Ter Stegen has a problem in his tendon and has done for some time," manager Ernesto Valverde said, quoted by Marca.

"At one point we thought he could be out for a while and it's now. He won't be available for the derby and it'll be difficult for the Supercopa de España [against Atlético Madrid]."

As far as ter Stegen's injury goes, the Germany international has apparently been recommended to undergo surgery by members of Barcelona's medical team.

But Valverde has stressed that the 27-year-old will only have an operation as a last resort.

"I don't know. I'm not a doctor. But that's an option we haven't spoken about," he added, quoted by AS. "We hope that the pains will gradually subside on their own. That's why we haven't taken any extreme measures."

For Neto, his league debut for Barcelona will prove to be the fifth match of his career against Espanyol.

The former Brazil international has kept three clean sheets in his previous four games against the Periquitos, losing just one match during his two-year spell at Valencia.

Although Barcelona will have their back-up goalkeeper in between the sticks at the Estadi Cornellà-El Prat, Valverde should have a first choice back four available to him with Nélson SemedoGerard PiquéClément Lenglet and Jordi Alba all available.
