Newcastle have distanced themselves from reports that they recently made an offer to sign Everton Soares in January.
Everton was in fine form for Gremio during the 2019 Série A season which concluded earlier this month, registering 11 goals and four assists to help Tricolor dos Pampas secure Copa Libertadores qualification for another year.
The 23-year-old also starred for Brazil during the Copa America, playing each game in his side's run to the final where he scored the opening goal in a 3-1 win over Peru.
His impressive performances saw the forward attract a significant amount of Premier League interest during the summer, with Arsenal and his namesake club Everton both going very close to securing his signature.
Newcastle are the latest English side to enter the race to sign Cebolinha, with Foot Mercato claiming that the Magpies have even gone as far as placing a bid for the player. According to their report, the Tynesiders would like to take Everton on loan in January before paying £38m to secure his services permanently at the end of the season.
The Chronicle are sceptical of these claims though, with their sources from within the club distancing themselves from confirming that any bid has been made.
However, the Newcastle-based media outlet understands that the club have been scouting the Brazilian intensely, with the club's head of recruitment Steve Nickson said to have undertaken several trips to South America to watch him in action.
If the Magpies do manage to pull off the transfer it will be quite the coup, due to the array of top European clubs interested in Everton. Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are both thought to be monitoring the situation, while underperforming Arsenal also remain admirers of his prodigious talent.
Newcastle boss Steve Bruce has been defying expectations this season, with his side comfortably clear from relegation trouble in tenth.
