Exclusive – Tottenham Hotspur have held talks over a move for Flamengo midfielder Gerson during the January transfer window.

The 22-year-old became the club's third most expensive signing ever when he returned to Brazil from AS Roma during the summer, signing a four-year contract with Flamengo after failing to impress during a three-year spell in Serie A.

Gerson has made 35 appearances for Flamengo since joining them earlier in the year and has helped them achieve their most successful season ever - winning the Copa Libertadores, Campeonato Carioca and Brasileirão.

90min understands that Tottenham Hotspur have held talks over a possible move for Gerson and the club wants to get a deal sorted before the January transfer window opens.

Tottenham have told Flamengo that they would even be willing to let Gerson stay in Brazil until the end of the Premier League season. That would mean that the midfielder would be available during the first stages of the Campeonato Carioca and the Copa Libertadores.

Even if a move doesn't happen until the summer, the club are pushing to complete a deal as soon as possible to avoid missing out on his signature.

Tottenham manager José Mourinho, who was aware of Gerson during the player's time in Italy, has given the move his blessing. The former Brazil Under-20 international would become the club's third new central midfielder of the season if he is able to join next month.

Tottenham spent a club-record £54m to sign Tanguy Ndombele from Olympique Lyonnais this summer. The club also brought Giovani Lo Celso in on a season-long loan - which includes an option to buy - on deadline day.

The midfielder is currently away with Flamengo at the Club World Cup and will feature for Jorge Jesus' side when they face Liverpool in the final on Saturday.
