Atletico Madrid remain keen to sign Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani, but a potential deal in January could prove challenging with the Parisians not keen on the idea of allowing the player to leave during the season.

Cavani joined the French side back in 2013 and has gone on to become the club's record goalscorer, netting 195 goals to this point. However, he has managed just eight appearances in the league in 2019/20, with only three of these coming from the start.

It was reported back in the summer that the Uruguayan was closing in on a switch to Atleti, with the report claiming that manager Diego Simeone is a 'big admirer' of the player. However, a deal failed to materialise.

More recently, with Los Rojiblancos continuing to struggle in front of goal, it was claimed that the Spanish side were keen to make another move to sign the 32-year-old in January.

ESPN have now reported that Cavani, who is out of contract in June, will not be offered a new deal by PSG. And although the report claims that his agent and half-brother Walter Guglielmone has held talks with Atletico, it reveals that the Parisians don't want to let the forward leave in January.

If the French giants were to let Cavani go during the winter window, they would be left with just Mauro Icardi as an out-and-out striker, which would be far from ideal.

As for Atletico, however, a move for the attacker would mean needing to sell Diego Costa, who has managed just two goals in 11 appearances for the side in La Liga this season. The striker's future has been called into question in recent weeks, with clubs from Brazil and China showing an interest in the player.

Los Rojiblancos appear very keen to land Cavani and although they would like to add him to their ranks in January, they may be forced to wait until the summer.
