Atlético Madrid's head coach Diego Simeone has insisted that he has not lost the backing of the dressing room, amid reports of disharmony.

The Argentine has had to deny reports of unrest in the squad following a poor start to the 2019/20 campaign. Atlético currently sixth in the table and six points behind the top two.

The home loss to Barcelona last time out raised questions about Simeone and his future at the club with several reports linking him away from the Wanda Metropolitano.

The 49-year-old rebuffed any questions in his recent press conference and stated that these reports have popped up every year about his side.

"In the eight years that I have been here, it has been said that the group was not with me every year," Simeone said. "I don't think there has been more criticism than in other seasons.

"We all have responsibility - mine is important, I assume it and I look for solutions so that everything returns to the best situation, which is to win.

"When you win, everything looks much better."

Simeone was characteristically assured in his press conference ahead of Atlético's game against Villarreal this weekend. He continued to play down any rumours that he had lost the backing of the dressing room throughout.

On top of this, he also recognised that Atlético were not having the best of times and going through a sort of 'transition' period.

"I always imagine positive things, and within them, there are situations that can be improved," he continued, "Our goal is to compete game after game. We will not change. Reality is what counts, day to day."

He urged his players to focus on competing with the teams directly above them rather than the top two. With only one win in their last five La Liga games, Atlético's title challenge might already be over.

Fourth-placed Real Sociedad are only a point ahead of Simeone's side and if results go their way Atlético could be back in the top four.
