Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone is said to be nearing the exit door at the Wanda Metropolitano after an underwhelming start to the season.

Los Rojiblancos currently find themselves sixth in La Liga, six points behind joint-leaders Barcelona and Real Madrid, having won just six of their 15 league games so far this season.

Diego Simeone

Those results are certainly not what we have come to expect from Atlético, and now Marca (via Sport Witness) claim that there are some at the club who believe that it could be time to move on from Simeone.

The majority of the frustration stems from the club's disappointing form this year. Having parted with €126m to sign João Félix during the summer, Atlético wanted to be competing for silverware on all fronts, with La Liga and Champions League glory high on their wish list.

However, they have looked well off the pace this year, and Simeone has attracted the majority of the blame for failing to put together a cohesive squad. They state that the boss 'has not hit the right key', and there is something missing from the team.

He now faces a battle to win over his critics, but if he cannot, they a move to the Premier League could be on the cards.

Arsenal are understood to be keen on the Argentine on their search for a new permanent manager. He could be part of their mysterious 12-man shortlist, and he may even move higher up on their wish list if he does become available for free.

However, another contender could be Everton, who wanted to lure Simeone to Goodison Park back in 2017. There were rumours that Simeone was actually relatively intrigued by the offer, although the Toffees' fall from grace this season would almost certainly change things.

Marco Silva

Everton do have the funds to make a financially acceptable offer to Simeone if they choose to sack Marco Silva, but the current situation at the club would almost definitely scare him away - especially if someone like Arsenal also reached out.
