Cristiano Ronaldo snubbed Monday night's Ballon d'Or ceremony in favour of the annual Serie A's Gala del Calcio, but the Juventus forward incredibly waited in his car until the very last minute to go in and pick up his awards.

The Portugal international managed to pick up the Serie A's best forward trophy, as well as the MVP award.

However, Ronaldo stole some of the headlines with what he did before being announced as the winner of those awards, as it was reported by journalist Tancredi Palmeri that he waited in his car until the very last minute before he went up to the stage.

It was an incredible thing to do moments before being presented an award, with speculation rife that he was looking to steal the attention away from the Ballon d'Or awards which was going on at exactly the same time in Paris.

Over at that ceremony, the Juve man finished behind Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk and winner Lionel Messi. The Argentine picked up a record sixth trophy, as he went one past Ronaldo's tally of five.

In all likelihood, the 34-year-old wasn't keen on witnessing his rival Messi surpass his record outright, especially with him missing out on a place in the top two altogether.

Ronaldo was also interviewed on stage as he expressed his happiness over picking up the two gongs. He said, via The Sun: "I'm happy, the Italian championship is very difficult. I would like to thank my Juventus team-mates and all the colleagues who voted for me. This year I will try to repeat it."

Ronaldo's super-agent Jorge Mendes was also interviewed, and was quick to speak out on his client's rivalry with Messi and standing among all footballers, stating: "Cristiano is the best player in history, and you know it."
