Norwich City vs Arsenal: Relying on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang & 5 Other Key Facts

facebooktwitterreddit

A small contingent of travelling Arsenal fans will be chomping at the bit to see their first match with interin manager Freddie Ljungberg in charge, following the departure of Unai Emery earlier this week.

The Swede, who was a key part of Arsenal's invincibles side, already has a fantastic track record at youth level management and he'll be looking for three points as he prepares to take control of his first match at senior level.

But with the Gunners on the road, Daniel Farke's Norwich City know they've got a fantastic chance to cause another upset in the Premier League as they look to pick up back to back wins for the first time this season.

'That's great, but if only there were some awesome stats we could read before the game.'

Well, Opta have got you covered, so here's a handful of their best which you can show off to your friends ahead of kick-off at Carrow Road.

Start as You (Don't) Mean to Go on

These two sides met on the first-ever Premier League matchday in August 1992, but it was actually Norwich City who came out on top with a 4-2 win at Highbury.

Since then, the Canaries have only won one of their next 15 games against Arsenal in the competition.

Games between Arsenal and Norwich City have ended in a draw six times, but the north Londoners have the edge in the history books with eight wins.

Matching a 25-Year Winless Record...

Arsenal haven't won any of their last five games in the Premier League - a record which extends to seven across all competitions.

They last went winless in six league matches between April and August in 2011.

But Arsenal haven't gone on a six-game winless run during a single season since 1994, just months before George Graham was replaced by Stewart Houston.

... and a Different 35-Year Record

Arsenal might be at risk of matching a 25-year record on Sunday, but a defeat would also see them have their worst record against promoted sides since the 1980s.

Their last two away games against promoted sides (vs Wolves and Sheffield United) have ended in defeat.

Arsenal last lost three away games in a row against promoted teams between October 1983 and November 1984, which spanned across Terry Neill and Don Howe's time in charge in north London.

More Than 3 Hours Without a Goal

Arsenal's problems in defence are nothing new for fans to contest with, but it's actually at the other end of the pitch which proved to be the catalyst for Emery's downfall.

Away from home, Arsenal have only scored five goals in the Premier League - only Norwich (three) and Watford (four) have a worse run.

The Gunners haven't found the back of the net outside of the Emirates in 212 minutes. They've had just five shots on target during that run.

Norwich's Not So Dangerous Danger Man

All the attention might be on Finland international Teemu Pukki at Carrow Road, but Emi Buendía has actually been Norwich City's key creative force this season.

The Argentine is at the top of the club's assists charts with four, while he's also created more chances (28) than any other player in Norfolk.

Despite his creativity, Buendía has now provided more assists without scoring a goal himself than any other player in the Premier League this season.

It's Auba or Nothing

If Ljungberg wants to get off to the perfect start as Arsenal's interim manager then he'll need Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to be firing on all cylinders on Sunday.

Ljungberg's already confirmed that Aubameyang will remain as the club's captain while he's in charge of the club, but it's the Gabon international's goalscoring responsibility which will be key against Norwich.

Aubameyang has scored 80% of Arsenal's away goals this season, while he's also scored eight times in 10 appearances against promoted sides since joining the club.
