Shakhtar Donetsk's Taison reacted to disgusting racist abuse by Dynamo Kyiv fans by kicking the ball into the crowd on Sunday evening, and was sent off as a result.

Both Taison and teammate Dentinho were part of the Shakhtar team that hosted rivals Dynamo Kyiv in the Ukrainian Premier League on Sunday. The home side prevailed 1-0, but the game was overshadowed by the sick events that unfolded late in the match.

Taison chased down a loose ball and was adjudged to have fouled his man, with sections of the away supporters then producing vile chants toward the two players. 31-year-old Taison reacted to this by picking up the ball and kicking it in the direction of the fans. You can view the video here.

Both he and his teammate Dentinho were in tears as the chants became more evident, causing the game to be halted for around nine minutes. However, the referee eventually decided to show Taison a red card for kicking the ball at the fans.

Shakhtar released a statement standing by their players following the conclusion of the game. It read: "FC Shakhtar categorically opposes any manifestations of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.

"There can be no justification for those who insult based on colour, religious or political beliefs. Such behaviour is unacceptable in civilised countries and football championships.

"UEFA applies the most stringent sanctions to clubs and associations whose fans show racism in matches.

"FC Shakhtar is a large football family, to whom such humiliating incidents bring pain and disappointment. We condemn this behaviour of the audience, we will always support and protect our players. We urge football authorities, clubs to stop racism in stadiums."

This is just the latest horrific case of racial abuse in football, with Mario Balotelli involved in a similar situation recently. Following a number of chants and noises from Hellas Verona supporters, the Italian booted the ball at the fans and stormed off.

The three-step protocol was once again activated in the match between Shakhtar and Kyiv but it was clearly insufficient. Despite the game being stopped while these sickening events unfolded, Taison was still shown a red card for reacting.

Further measures need to be taken as this simply cannot continue.
