UEFA Looking to Host 2024 Champions League Final at New York's MetLife Stadium
By Ben Carter
UEFA are apparently in the process of planning to hold the 2024 Champions League final in the United States, with European football's governing body shortlisting the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey as a potential host venue.
It's already been confirmed that the next four finals will be held at Turkey's national stadium in Istanbul (2020), the Gazprom Arena in Russia (2021), Bayern Munich's Allianz Arena (2022) and Wembley Stadium (2023).
But with UEFA still yet to confirm where the final will be held in 2024, Morning Consult report that European football's governing body will look to host the Champions League final in the United States - and specifically in New York.
It's previously been suggested by UEFA that a final could be held in North America, but that concept appears to be becoming closer to reality after the organisation awarded U.S. media rights for its competitions, including the Champions League, to CBS Corp. and Univision Communications Inc. from 2021 to 2024.
It's even been suggested by Morning Consult that the suggestion of a final in the United States in 2024 was a key selling point in negotiations.
Holding competitive European matches in America is already something which has been pushed for by La Liga's president Javier Tebas, with it most recently suggested that Atlético Madrid trip to Villarreal next month could be held in the United States.
That suggestion was unsurprisingly met with widespread criticism from fans of Spanish football, and these most recent claims about a UEFA Champions League final being held on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean has also riled up supporters.
That's as if UEFA do make the decision to host the 2024 Champions League final - the biggest club game in European football - in the United States then that would leave large sections of regular match-going fans unable to attend the game.
