So far, this season has been a curious one for Chelsea. Before they had even kicked a ball, many felt this would be a transitional season for Chelsea, but a lengthy unbeaten run saw several fans dream of a Premier League title.
At their best, this Chelsea side can be breathtaking. Their intricate, possession-based style of play can beat anybody, but the absence of a 'Plan B' has left fans feeling concerned. If Jorginho or Eden Hazard are not at their best, Chelsea sometimes struggle to perform.
Here are five players who Chelsea should target in the winter transfer window.
1. Mauro Icardi
Starting off strong. If you asked Chelsea fans what they want for Christmas, many would say 'a reliable striker'. Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud have shown glimpses of their ability, but neither poses enough of a goal threat to lead a side who are targeting several pieces of major silverware.
Prolific superstars are not easy to come by. However, there have been multiple suggestions that Chelsea will move for Inter's Mauro Icardi in January, and that would certainly be a Christmas miracle for Chelsea fans.
The 25-year-old scores goals for fun, regardless of the opposition. It comes as easy to him as breathing, and Chelsea need a player like him. Icardi could help take Chelsea to the next level, and that should be priceless for the club.
2. Edinson Cavani
It seems as though Chelsea have been linked with Edinson Cavani since the Uruguayan striker first learned to walk. Here we are, almost in 2019, and the rumours of an imminent move for Cavani have resurfaced once again. Fans of the Blues will be hoping that this year will finally be the year that the rumours prove to be true.
At 31 years old, Cavani should prove to be a cheaper alternative to Icardi. However, don't let his age fool you - the Paris Saint-Germain hitman is world class.
Signing both Cavani and Icardi may be a step too far, but bringing in just one of the duo would drastically improve the club's fortunes.
3. Sandro Tonali
Italy's future looks to be in safe hands with Sandro Tonali. The 18-year-old midfielder has emerged as one of the world's finest prospects, and it is not hard to see how he would fit in at Chelsea.
The Blues would likely be reluctant to insert Tonali straight into the starting lineup, but he would be a superb alternative to Jorginho. Comparisons to Italian icon Andrea Pirlo speak volumes of Tonali's ability. The youngster loves to play with the ball at his feet and has earned praise for his ability to dictate the tempo of a match.
With Cesc Fabregas set to depart, Tonali could be an ideal long-term replacement.
4. Thorgan Hazard
Chelsea's primary mission over the next few months should be to convince Eden Hazard to sign a new contract. If they are looking for some help in doing so, bringing his brother Thorgan to the club should do it.
Thorgan also spent three years at Chelsea between 2012 and 2015, but never made a single appearance for the Blues. However, he has been in blistering form with Borussia Monchengladbach this season, racking up 12 goals and seven assists in all competitions, and he would bring Chelsea exactly what they need.
He could prove to be the goalscoring winger that they have been looking for, but he would also give Eden an extra incentive to stay at the club. If there has ever been a perfect signing, surely Thorgan would be that.
5. Elseid Hysaj
In defence, both Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta have struggled this season. Whether it a change in system or simply their age, the duo have failed to live up to the lofty expectations of their fans.
Napoli's Elseid Hysaj has found himself linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in recent weeks, and that could be a crucial signing for the Blues. Predominantly a right-back, Hysaj is comfortable filling in on the left too, meaning he could replace either defender in the lineup.
Most fans dream of youngster Reece James making an impact at right-back in the near future, so Hysaj could assume control of the left side from Marcos Alonso. His versatility could be crucial for the Blues going forward.
