Picking the Best Potential Southampton Lineup to Face Man City in the Premier League on Sunday

Struggling Southampton face a daunting task on Sunday when they travel to the reigning Premier League champions.

Sitting 16th and just two points above the relegation places, the Saints have endured a tough start. Mark Hughes side have won once all season and have scored the joint second lowest goals – with six from 10 games.

Low in confidence, here’s how they could lineup on Sunday.

1. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Alex McCarthy (GK) – Shot stopper McCarthy has pulled off a string of fine performances this term.

Ryan Bertrand (LB) – A regular in this Saints side, Bertrand’s experience could be key to handling the tricky Riyad Mahrez.

Wesley Hoedt (CB) – The Dutchman has been ever-present in the backline and will have his hands full with opposite number Sergio Aguero.

Jack Stephens (CB) Yet to gain a regular run in the team, the 24-year-old will be hoping to demonstrate his Premier League potential.

Cedric Soares (RB) – Like Bertrand, Cedric provides an attacking threat as well as defensive knowhow.

2. Midfielders

Mohamed Elyounoussi (LM) – Signed from Basel in the summer, the Norwegian international is yet to make an impact for his new side.

Mario Lemina (CM) – Hot-headed at times, Lemina’s discipline will be fully tested against City.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (CM) – An anchor in midfield, Hojbjerg is also a threat going forward with two goals so far.

Nathan Redmond (RM) – Although blessed with pace, Redmond has often lacked a cutting edge.

3. Forwards

Charlie Austin (ST) – An aerial threat, Austin can be a nuisance for any defender in the Premier League when fit.

Danny Ings (ST) – The former Burnley scored three in his first five, but like his side, the goals have dried up.
