Uruguay 0-2 France: Player Ratings as South Americans Crash Out of the World Cup

A Fernando Muslera howler consigned Uruguay to a quarter final exit from the World Cup. Raphael Varane's header five minutes before half time gave France a crucial lead, before Muslera palmed a speculative Antoine Griezmann shot into his own net, sending France into the semi finals.

Here are our player ratings from the first quarter final of this World Cup.

1. Uruguay: Goalkeepers & Defenders

Fernando Muslera 4/10: Looked shaky for the majority of the match before the howler that would ultimately lead to Uruguay crashing out. The flight of Griezmann's shot may have been difficult to judge, but at this level it's a mistake that cannot be made.

Martin Caceres 5/10: Wasn't far away from an immediate equaliser just moments after Varane gave France the lead. Wasn't heavily influential though, and didn't provide enough width.

Jose Giminez 6/10: Typically solid performance from the centre back who has formed a fearsome partnership with Godin. Not much he could have done about either goal.

Diego Godin 6/10: Missed an opportunity to score what would've been a crucial equaliser, at the back he was his formidable self. Not at fault for either goal.

Diego Laxalt 6/10: Always looks like he's got a mistake in him. Dealt admirably with the threat of Mbappe who was largely quiet.

2. Uruguay: Midfielders

Lucas Torreira 6/10: Delivery from set pieces was good, this was a typically tenacious and combative midfield performance from the youngster.

Nahitan Nandez 5/10: Deployed centrally in Uruguay's narrow formation, Nandez looked most effective when executing Uruguay's press. Didn't impose himself on the game, however.

Matias Vecino 5/10: Worked hard in midfield, but couldn't provide any real quality. Lost Varane for France's opener.

Rodrigo Bentancur 6/10: Arguably Uruguay's main threat going forward, his technical ability is clear for all to see. Linked well with Suarez, ultimately to no avail.

3. Uruguay: Forwards

Luis Suarez 5/10: Hard working performance from the Barcelona star, but struggled without Edinson Cavani. Noticeably exasperated by Stuani's lack of ability alongside him.

Christian Stuani 4/10: Not good enough for a World Cup starting eleven. Suarez needed more from his striking partner, but he didn't have the quality.

4. Uruguay: Substitutes

Maxi Gomez 5/10: Failed to have any impact on the game when he came on.

Christian Rodriguez 5/10: Embroiled in a brawl after appearing to collide with Mbappe, other than that he offered nothing.

Jonathan Urretaviscaya 5/10: Offered his side some pace down the flank, but couldn't turn the game.

5. France: Goalkeepers & Defenders

Hugo Lloris 8/10: Superb stop from Martin Caceres kept France in the lead going into half time. Always looked confident when called into action.

Benjamin Pavard 7/10: Still doesn't look entirely comfortable at right back, but his defensive prowess more than makes up for natural pace. Dealt with Laxalt well.

Raphael Varane 8/10: Excellent header gave France a crucial lead. Marshalled the back four well and appears to have a strong partnership with Samuel Umtiti.

Samuel Umtiti 7/10: Kept his Barca team mate Luis Suarez very quiet as well as dealing with the non threat of Stuani. 

Lucas Hernandez 7/10: Always willing to provide the team with some extra width, looked shaky defensively at times but ultimately dependable.

6. France: Midfielders

Paul Pogba 7/10: Showed flashes, broke the lines occasionally and strode forward from deep to join in attacks. Not a masterclass but he performed well.

N'Golo Kante 7/10: A typical Kante performance, broke up play and moved the ball on. Never looked like being phased by the big stage.

Corentin Tolisso 7/10: Effort from long range almost made it 3-0, other than that he had a quietly effective game.

7. France: Forwards

Kylian Mbappe 6/10: Not quite the world beating performance from the round of 16, but provided a constant threat down the right.

Olivier Giroud 6/10: Gave the Uruguayan defence a few problems with his physicality, but didn't have a massive effect on the game.

Antoine Griezmann 8/10: Whilst his goal may have been lucky, he was at the heart of everything France did going forward. Crucial for this side.

8. France: Substitutes

Nabil Fekir 5/10: Not on the field long enough to have an effect.

Steven Nzonzi 6/10: Brought on to protect France's back four and did his job well.

Ousmane Dembele 5/10: Brief cameo wasn't enough to show what he's capable of.
