7 Top Flight European Leagues With Genuine Title Races Unfolding in 2017/18

Manchester City will mathematically seal their third Premier League crown in eight seasons in a matter of weeks, with the title race in England long since over.

It is a similar story in Germany where Bayern Munich have opened up a near 20 point lead in the Bundesliga, as well as in France where Paris Saint-Germain are 12 points clear in Ligue 1. In Spain, meanwhile, Barcelona have a seven point cushion in La Liga.

Elsewhere across the continent, things are not so clear cut and there is plenty left to play for.

Here's a look at seven top flight European leagues where the title race is very much ON...

7. Nemzeti Bajnoksag I

Hungary's Nemzeti Bajnoksag I is in the midst of a two-horse title race between 29-time champions and national record holders Ferencvaros and two-time champions Videoton, a club whose titles have both come since 2010.

The traditional giants from Budapest currently lead the upstarts from Szekesfehervar by three points, with 14 rounds of games left to play.

Debrecen, Hungarian champions on seven occasions, are 10 points off the lead in third place.

6. Ukrainian Premier League

This season's title race in the Ukranian Premier League features the usual suspects in Shakhtar Donetsk, who are still unable to play games at their home stadium following 2014 conflict, and Dynamo Kyiv.

Both clubs, who have won all but one national title between them since the league's inception in 1992, have already qualified for the new post-season format that will see the top six play 10 further games against each other to determine the eventual champions.

With the points column set to reset, everything is still to play for in this one.

5. Women's Super League

The 2017/18 season is the first full since England's Women's Super League moved from a summer calendar to a more traditional winter/spring schedule.

A two-horse title race is already on the cards at the halfway stage as Manchester City and Chelsea do battle at the top of the table - the pair have traded first and second place between themselves in each of the last three years.

Both side remain unbeaten, with Chelsea trailing City by two points.

4. Superleague Greece

The Greek title has been the almost exclusive property of Olympiacos this century, with the Piraeus club topping the table in 19 of the last 21 seasons.

Only Panathinaikos have knocked them off top spot during that time, most recently in 2009/10, but Olympiacos are third in a three-horse race as the 2017/18 campaign nears its conclusion.

Panathinaikos are nowhere to be seen, though, with AEK Athens second and PAOK Salonica, whose last title came in 1984/85, leading the way at the top. Olympiacos are six points behind PAOK with only nine games left to play.

3. Super Lig

Besiktas are the current title holders in Turkey and have made fine progress in the Champions League this season, but the Istanbul club face a real fight to retain their domestic crown.

That is because 2017/18 is fast developing into a fierce battle at the top of the table, with Galatasaray leading nouveau riche Istanbul Basaksehir by a single point. Fenerbahce are three points off the top in third, while Besiktas are fourth, one point further back.

If Istanbul Basaksehir can overtake Galatasaray and finish top, they will go one better than last season and become only the sixth ever club to be crowned Turkish champions.

2. Primeira Liga

There is no upset on the cards in the ongoing Primeira Liga title race in Portugal, but there is very little to separate the country's traditional giants: Porto, Benfica and Sporting CP.

It is currently Porto who hold the advantage, leading both Benfica and Sporting by two points, while also having a game in hand on their rivals.

Benfica have won the last four Portuguese titles, with Porto's last triumph coming in 2012/13. Sporting haven't been national champions since 2001/02, and anything can still happen.

1. Serie A

With the demise of the Milan clubs, Juventus have the Serie A title in each of the last six seasons, an Italian record. But their monopoly has come under threat from Napoli in 2017/18 and the Bianconeri trail their new rivals by a point with 14 games left to play.

Napoli finished second behind Juve in 2012/13 and 2015/16, but haven't actually won the Scudetto since 1989/90 and the days of Diego Maradona.

With nearest challengers Inter, Roma and Lazio trailing the leaders by as many as 14, 15 and 16 points respectively, this is most definitely a two-horse race.
