8 of the Longest Undefeated Streaks in History Across Multiple European Leagues

Celtic's incredible 69-game unbeaten domestic run was ended emphatically earlier this month, when they were beaten 4-0 by Hearts. It was manager Brendan Rodgers' first defeat in Scotland since taking over at Celtic in May 2016. 


The Hoops' impressive run adds them to a prestigious list of some of Europe's greatest clubs who boast some of the longest undefeated streaks in domestic league football.


Here are eight of the longest league unbeaten streaks across Europe...

8. Arsenal 2003-2004

League games unbeaten: 49


The English record for most league games played consecutively without defeat was set by Arsenal during the 2004-2005 Premier League season. 


Their run of 49 games without defeat saw the Gunners go 'invincible' in the 2003-2004 season and win the Premier League title without a single loss. 


Their streak ended as memorably as the run itself when Arsenal lost to Manchester United in October 2004 in a fiery match. The match finished with a brawl in the tunnel, and a slice of pizza being thrown at United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. 

7. Ajax 1994-1996

 League games unbeaten: 52


In the 1994-1995 season, Ajax became the first club to complete a Dutch Eredivisie season without losing a game. They retained the league title that year, and made it three in a row the following season. 


When they won the Champions League title in 1995, Ajax's unbeaten streak in domestic and European competition was extended to 69 matches over 18 months.  

6. Shakhtar Donetsk 2000-2002

League games unbeaten: 55 


Shakhtar Donetsk's first dominating run in Ukraine's top flight came at the turn of the century when they began an unbeaten streak which would go on for 55 league matches. 


The club won its first ever Ukrainian Premier League title during their streak in the 2001-2002 season. They also earned their first domestic double, after they won that year's Ukrainian Cup.

5. Porto 2010-2012

 League games unbeaten: 55


With a squad which boasted the likes of Falcao, Hulk, and James Rodriguez, Porto enjoyed an impressive run of 55 league games without defeat. 


In the 2010-2011 season Porto won Portugal's Primeira Liga without defeat for the first time in the club's history. They won the Europa League in the same season to add to their domestic treble for the campaign. 

4. Celtic 2016-2017

League games unbeaten: 56


56 of Celtic's 69 game unbeaten streak from May 2016 to December 2017 came in the Scottish top flight.


It was a formidable run where Celtic dominated Scotland's cup and league competitions. The Hoops completed a hat-trick of domestic trophies last season when they won the Scottish Cup, and Scottish League Cup, and their sixth consecutive Scottish Premier League title. 


Despite losing their first match in over year, Celtic's dominance over the Scotland is sure to continue. They have already retained their League Cup title this term. 

3. AC Milan 1991-1993

League games unbeaten: 58


The Rossoneri became to first team to win the Serie A title without losing a single game in the 1991-1992 season. Manager Fabio Cappello's Milan team boasted a squad which included Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit, and Frank Rijkaard.


Milan were close to making it two successive seasons without defeat, but were beaten by Parma in March of 1993. They would still go on to win the Serie A title again that season, despite the loss.

2. Lincoln Red Imps 2009-2014

League games unbeaten: 88


Lincoln Red Imps have been a dominating force in the Gibraltar Premier Division to say the least. From 2003 to 2016, Lincoln won 14 league titles in a row.


During that incredible run, between 2009 and 2014, Lincoln did not lose a single top flight match. While they did lose matches in cup competitions in that time, Lincoln fans and players enjoyed 1,959 days without a defeat in the league. 

1. Steaua Bucuresti 1986-1989

League games unbeaten: 104


The European record for longest streak of domestic league matches without defeat is held by Romanian side Steaua Bucuresti. 


It was a golden age for the club, where their domestic dominance turned them into European giants. Bucuresti reached the European cup semi-final in 1988 and the final in 1989. 


They won four consecutive league titles during their run and four domestic cups. In all domestic competitions, Steaua Bucuresti record breaking run extends to 119 matches.
