6 Things Arsenal & Liverpool Fans Need to Know About Potential New Signing Leon Goretzka

There's been a flood of rumours flying around that Schalke 04 star Leon Goretzka looks set for the Premier League next summer.

The German's contract is set to expire in June with the Bundesliga club. Schalke appear desperate to keep hold of their star, but speculation suggests that he most likely won't sign a new deal.

England appears to be the destination that is much talked about, with the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool being linked with moves for the midfielder. The 22-year-old is free to talk with foreign clubs in January and sign a pre-contract agreement ahead of the summer.

Here are 6 things you will need to know about Leon Goretzka:

6. Goretzka Changed His Diet to Help His Career

The midfielder was forced to change his diet a few years ago. He was diagnosed with a chronic bowel inflammation that dampened his ability to recover after games. So the 22-year-old had to cut certain foods from his diet to help him with his health problems.

Speaking to magazine 11 Freunde, Goretzka revealed that: "I completely changed what I eat. I was diagnosed with a chronic bowel inflammation, which had been having a negative impact on my ability to recover from games.

"It was caused by different foods. I've stopped eating gluten, cow's milk, pork and nuts. As a result, I have fewer issues with my health and can recover from a game much quicker."

5. He Is Already a German International

At the age of 22, Goretzka has already made 12 appearances for the German national side, nine of them coming this year.

The Schalke star featured heavily for Germany at the FIFA Confederations Cup in the summer, where he played four times and netting three goals, as he helped his team lift the trophy in July against Chile.

He was also a part of the Olympic team in 2016 that won the silver medal, but he only participated in the first match after getting injured.

4. His Old Club Thinks He Could Be a Big Deal

According to the Bundesliga official website, Goretzka's former manager at VfL Bochum, Peter Neururer, didn't hold back on how he felt about the star when he described him as a 'once-in-a-century talent'.

The club's former sporting director Jens Todt further sang his praises a few years ago, when he said that: "I have never seen an 18-year-old who has so much class and desire. The boy will be one of the world's best!"

3. Europe's Biggest Clubs Want Him

If he does decide to leave, the 22-year-old won't be short of clubs who are interested in him. The German international has reportedly attracted the eye of many of Europe's top clubs.

The list is long, with the likes of Arsenal, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham being linked with the German.

But reports do suggest that the Premier League appears to be his most likely destination.

2. He Is a Very Diverse Player

Gorezka is a big presence in the middle of the field at 6ft 2in. He can play as a defensive midfielder and is good at shielding the defence, but can also play in other positions across the midfield, including the playmaker role.

His talents extend far beyond being able to break-up opponents attacks. The German has an excellent ability on the ball and is great at linking up the defence with the attack. Another  weapon he has is his attacking ability, he can drive up the field with the ball.

The 22-year-old also has a good goal scoring record for a player who often plays in that deep-lying midfield role.

1. He Will Make a Decision About His Future in January

With speculation increasing about what his plans are, Goretzka opened up on what he will do in January. Speaking about his future earlier this month, according to the Independent, he revealed that: "The final decision will be made in January."

So all the clubs who have an interest in the star will be particularly paying attention in January to see what the German will decide.
