REVEALED: Which of Europe's Top 11 Leagues Has the Youngest Average Age?

How does the Premier League compare to rivals European leagues when it comes to the age of the players stepping out onto the pitch each week? What about La Liga or Serie A - are their players on average older or younger than league elsewhere in Europe?

Ranked oldest to youngest, here's a look at the average age in each of Europe's top 11 leagues.

Data sourced from Transfermarkt

11. Super Lig (Turkey) - 27.3 years

Oldest Squad: Istanbul Basaksehir - 30 years

Youngest Squad: Kasimpasa - 24.7 years

Turkish club Istanbul Basaksehir, who are competing in the Europa League this season, have the oldest squad in Europe's top 11 leagues. The average age is 30, with 15 of the 26-man squad north of that milestone. Only four players are under 27.

10. Russian Premier League - 27.3 years

Oldest Squad: SKA Khabarovsk - 28.5 years

Youngest Squad: Akhmat Grozny - 25.7 years

The range of average ages in the Russian Premier League is relatively small. Reigning champions Spartak Moscow have an average squad age of 27 years, but only three clubs have a younger average - Tosno, Krasnodar and Akhmat Grozny.

9. Premier League (England) - 27.1 years

Oldest Squad: West Bromwich Albion - 29.3 years

Youngest Squad: Liverpool - 25.4 years

The Premier League prides itself as the best league in the world, but it is certainly not a place where young talent is let loose to develop. The average age across all 20 clubs is just over 27, with the youngest Premier League squad only 25.4 years at Liverpool.

8. La Liga (Spain) - 26.9 years

Oldest Squad: Leganes - 28.1 years

Youngest Squad: Valencia - 25 years

Youth definitely seems to be working a treat at Valencia this season. Los Che have made a fine start to the 2017/18 season in La Liga, despite possessing the youngest squad in the division. Barcelona's squad is towards the older end at 27.5 years.

7. Ukrainian Premier League - 25.5 years

Oldest Squad: Oleksandria - 28.4 years

Youngest Squad: Stal Kamyanske - 21.5 years

The average age in the Shakhtar Donetsk squad is 27 years, making it the second oldest in the Ukrainian Premier League, but Oleksandria's 28.4 is way out ahead. Astonishingly, only three players in Stal Kamyanske's squad are over the age of 23.

6. Primeira Liga (Portugal) - 26 years

Oldest Squad: Desportivo Aves - 29.2 years

Youngest Squad: Estoril - 24.3 years

At 29.2 years, the average age of the Desportivo Aves in the Primeira Liga is a slight anomaly. The next oldest squad belongs to Belenenses, with Porto also among the oldest at 27 years. Reigning champions Benfica occupy the middle ground an average age of 26.2 years.

5. Serie A (Italy) - 26.2 years

Oldest Squad: Juventus - 28.6 years

Youngest Squad: Fiorentina - 24.3 years

The average age in the Juventus squad has been raised by legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, a player who will celebrate his 40th birthday in January. Andrea Barzagli and Giorgio Chiellini are among five others who are at least 31 years of age.

4. Ligue 1 (France) - 25.6 years

Oldest Squad: Amiens - 27.6 years

Youngest Squad: Lille - 22.5 years

A full 18 month separates the average age of the current Lille squad from the next youngest squad in France's Ligue 1. That belong to Lyon at an average age of 24. Taking Lille out of the equation, the average squad age range across the division is only 3.6 years.

3. Bundesliga (Germany) - 25.3 years

Oldest Squad: Bayern Munich - 26.5 years

Youngest Squad: Wolfsburg - 24.3 years

The average age range in Germany is very tight. Only 2.2 years separates the oldest squad at Bayern Munich and the youngest at Wolfsburg. Bayern's squad would be younger but for 36-year-old Tom Starke, 34-year-old Franck Ribery and 33-year-old Arjen Robben.

2. Jupiler Pro League (Belgium) - 24.7 years

Oldest Squad: Kortrijk - 26.4 years

Youngest Squad: Royal Excel Mouscron - 23.2 years

With an average squad age of 26, Anderlecht have the third oldest team in the Belgian top flight. It is perhaps not surprising that the Jupiler Pro League as a whole should be one of Europe's youngest, with many talented players quickly snapped up by clubs in other countries.

1. Eredivisie (Netherlands) - 24.3 years

Oldest Squad: Excelsior - 25.9 years

Youngest Squad: Ajax - 22.9 years

The average age of Ajax's squad is significantly raised by the presence of 34-year-old veteran striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, one of two players over 30. As many as 13 members of the 28-man squad are aged 20 or younger - six of those are still teenagers.
