7 Championship Defenders to Look Out for in This Transfer Window

The transfer window is now in full flow, with teams looking to strengthen their sides ahead of the new season.

With a lot of teams targeting some of the world's big name stars, a lot of lesser known players, and our own lower leagues, are often overlooked.

The Championship is a very tough league, with some fantastic talent on show, so it's an excellent opportunity for Premier League teams to scout for players to step up to the top flight.

So, without further ado, here are seven of the Championship's top defenders to look out for this transfer window.

7. Tom Lees - Sheffield Wednesday

Tom Lees made 35 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday last season, becoming a crucial part to their play-off push.

The 26-year-old has been a regular for Wednesday in recent years, with his strength and commitment at the back helping Wednesday to claim 47 points at home last season, the sixth highest in the league.

6. Marc Roberts - Barnsley

Despite being Championship new boys, Barnsley took to the league very well last season, managing to climb to a 14th position finish.

This was in no small part down to defender Marc Roberts, who was a rock at the back for the Tykes throughout his 40 appearances last season.

He's strong in the air, excellent at clearing the ball, and bagged four goals last season, making him a key player for Barnsley, and at 26-years-old the defender still has a lot to offer.

5. Alex Pearce - Derby County

Derby County kept 17 clean sheets last season, the third highest in the league, showing off their defensive capabilities to clinch vital points.

Alex Pearce has become a key part of this strong defence since his return from a loan spell at Bristol City, making 40 appearances for the Rams.

The 28-year-old is strong, aggressive and good in the air, and has relished the chance to prove himself at Derby.

4. Tom Clarke - Preston North End

Tom Clarke was a star centre-back in the Championship last year, with 207 tackles and interceptions combined, more than any other.

Preston North End's captain lead by example, also adding four goals in his 42 appearances to push Preston up to an 11th placed finish.

3. Liam Moore - Reading

Reading were excellent defensively last season, which played a large part in them getting all the way to the play-off final.

With the second highest home wins, fewest home defeats and fourth highest home clean sheets, their defence propelled them through the year.

Liam Moore made 39 appearances for the Royals over the season, becoming a strong, reliable regular at the back.

The 24-year-old has spent a large amount of his career on-loan from Leicester City, but after settling at Reading he's certainly stepped up.

2. Chris Gunter - Reading

Reading captain Chris Gunter is the heart and soul of their defensive line.

He's passionate, committed, strong, aggressive and has a defensive intelligence that allows him to make crucial tackles and interceptions.

The 28-year-old has been a rock for Reading, and would provide strength to many shaky defences in the Premier League.

1. Pontus Jansson - Leeds United

Pontus Jansson won over Leeds United fans last season with his committed displays at the back, and fantastic defensive performances.

The 26-year-old made his loan move permanent in January, but is already being linked with a possible Premier League switch.

The Swedish international averaged 10 clearances a game, putting him in the top five players of the Championship, so it's no surprise there's interest in the talented centre-back.
