Southampton are interested in potentially making a move for Sassuolo striker Gregoire Defrel, according to The Sun. They could however face competition from Italian giants Roma, who are also monitoring the Frenchman's situation.

The 26-year-old netted 13 times in Serie A last season, leading his club to tenth in the league - prompting incoming Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino to identify Defrel as a player, who could bolster his attacking options. Charlie Austin has struggled for fitness in the last year, but is expected to make it back in time for the new campaign.

Defrel joined Sassuolo in August 2015, joining from Cesena for an undisclosed fee. The left-footed striker has played in Italy for the entirety of his career which began at Parma, but only made a single appearance for the Crusaders as a 19-year-old.

Defrel is valued at £18m and is now believed to want to make the move to the Premier League and Southampton could be the club to make it happen.

It would be the second time that the Saints have raided the Italian top flight this year after the signing of Manolo Gabbiadini from Napoli.

Fans at St Mary's will be happy if Defrel proves to be as successful as the Italian, and will hope that if the move does indeed materialise he will provide some genuine competition up front.
