Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is looking to pip his old club Barcelona to the signing of coveted Borussia Dortmund starlet, Ousmane Dembele.

The flying French winger arrived in Germany last summer from Rennes for £10.5m and enjoyed a hugely fruitful campaign, scoring six goals and assisting 12 more in the Bundesliga alone.

His form has been so impressive for both club and country that Europe's elite have swarmed around him with City being the latest party expressing interest in the 20-year-old.

Barca were thought to the favourites for his signature after their long-term pursuit, but according to Le10 Sport, Guardiola is looking to spoil the party by adding yet another talented attacker to his roster.

The Blaugrana were interested in Dembele last summer, but the explosive winger opted to make the move to Dortmund for consistent first-team football.

The Ruhr-based side are thought to be holding out for £80m, a valuation that would smash City's previous transfer record, the £54m they paid Wolfsburg for Kevin de Bruyne.

Guardiola will also have to be wary of the way he pursues Dembele with Dortmund's director Michael Zorc warning that they will do everything in their power to protect their most valuable asset, saying: “Ousmane Dembele has a long-term contract – we are planning on it.

“There are no negotiations. Dembele will also play for BVB in the coming season.

“If Dortmund is not contacted [by interested clubs], we could initiate a Fifa procedure.”

Alongside the signing of Bernardo Silva from Monaco, Dembele's potential arrival would help assemble one of the finest attack-minded squads in football history.
