Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale will opt to join Manchester United over Premier League champions Chelsea if he leaves the Spanish capital this summer, according to Diario Gol.

Speculation over Bale's potential move to United has persisted for years - with Bale turning down the chance to move to Old Trafford before in favour of Real in 2013 - and United have been linked with returning bids for the Welshman in the summers that followed.

A report from the Independent last week cited sources from both United and Real that claimed that a deal for Bale is thought to be "much likelier" than it has ever been before, given the player's recurring injury problems and lack of form this season, and the new report only adds further weight to the claims.

Bale was once considered a darling child of club president Florentino Perez, but the interest in the player has waned over the course of this campaign.

Real Madrid have other targets in mind - namely Eden Hazard of Chelsea and Monaco's Kylian Mbappe - and are believed to be more open to negotiating as United chase a number of marquee signings this summer.

The 27-year-old is believed to be happy to stay at Real, but if pressured into the move it's now claimed he will willingly move to Manchester in order to restart his career. Chelsea have long been linked with the player too, but Bale's preference is believed to be a move to the north west given the financial rewards United will be able to offer.

United have also been linked with moves for Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann and Bale's teammate James Rodriguez, plus a number of other names. Transfer silly season is here, people.
