Former Barcelona midfielder Alen Halilovic has revealed why his time with the Catalan giants did not work out.

The 18-year-old joined the Spanish side in 2014, before heading on loan to Sporting Gijon and being sold to Hamburg, where he’s been loaned out for two years to Las Palmas.

Speaking prior to his Las Palmas side's 4-1 defeat against his former club, the Croatian midfielder named the quality of Barcelona's forward line as being a major factor in his departure.

"I arrived very young, at 18 years old. If in front of you you have Neymar, Suarez, Messi," Halilovic said, as quoted by Spanish media outlet Sport.

"It’s hard to have chances and I had five years left on the contract. I’m not a player that likes sitting on the bench and I only think in enjoying my life. I wanted to play and show what I could do."

The attacking midfielder also mentioned that he is still maintains close contact with many of his former teammates.

He added: "With Rakitic, I speak to him a lot, with Pique, Jordi Alba, Lionel Messi and Neymar. I had good times with them and they are friends."

Despite not making a single appearance for the Barcelona first-team, Halilovic remained optimistic about his chances of playing for another big club in the future.

"Yes, I see it. I look at Dybala and Griezmann, who at 19 or 20 years old they didn’t grow up at the best teams in the world, but when you have chances and one or two good seasons…. I see myself playing for a great side, but I have to keep growing."
